Xueli Chen, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Xueli is a postdoctoral scholar at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). He currently works at the ABPDU on the valorization of underutilized, complex carbon resources, ranging from natural polymers in plant biomass residues to synthetic polymers in waste textiles, into bioavailable intermediates for producing value-added fuels, chemicals, and materials. His research experience includes feedstock characterization; mechanical preprocessing (e.g., ball milling and pelleting); deconstruction (e.g., advanced solvent systems); and catalysis (e.g., alcoholysis and catalyst synthesis). His work connects feedstock logistics with biorefinery conversion and integrates bioprocess engineering with system analysis.

Before joining LBNL, Xueli worked in Prof. Shang-Tian Yang’s group at The Ohio State University, where he helped develop and evaluate novel bioprocesses and bioreactor systems for lignocellulosic butanol production. During his Ph.D. studies, he worked with Prof. Nathan Mosier and Prof. Michael Ladisch at Purdue University’s Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering (LORRE), investigating the use of pelleting to address challenges associated with processing and converting lignocellulosic biomass in biorefineries.
