The Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) Scale-Up Virtual Expo 2: Next Gen Tech took place from December 10-11, 2024. The event featured presentations from 38 entities around the world working on scale-up software, data, AI, equipment, and expertise.
“The environments in bioreactors and during downstream processing differ significantly from lab-scale operations, requiring specialized software and hardware tools tailored to the larger-scale environments,” said ABPDU Director Deepti Tanjore. “We are happy to bring forward these much needed — but often overlooked — tools and expertise available for lab- and bench-scale researchers to access and engage in ‘science of scale-up’ studies and make their lab-scale biotechnologies more robust for scale-up.”
The two-day event saw 165 attendees from 19 countries, with representation from 72 companies and 22 universities and non-profits.
“I found the Expo helpful in understanding the technologies clients might use to scale their processes from bench to pilot, and what data visualization tools they might use to understand their data,” said attendee Charles Isaac, Manufacturing Technology Transfer Director at Fermic. “(It’s) always good to hear what is happening in the industry.”
Recordings of the event are now available on ABPDU’s YouTube channel.
“As the Executive Director of an early-stage startup, I found the event particularly insightful. The diverse range of opportunities presented provided valuable ideas on how startups at various stages can initiate R&D with the aim of advancing to commercial scale,” said attendee Hooman Parhizkar, CEO and co-founder of ZOLX. “I was particularly impressed by the (ABPDU), which stood out as a comprehensive solution for characterization and process development — an approach that could significantly de-risk R&D efforts.”
“APBDU’s Next Gen Tech Expo was a much appreciated technology state-of-the-union. For those of us no longer in the lab, the concise 15-30 minute presentations provided a valuable overview of the latest equipment and services driving the ecosystem forward,” said Felix Lam of Speculative Technologies. “An added bonus was the inclusion of European talks, which highlighted efforts I typically have little exposure to.”
ABPDU is planning to regularly conduct expos on a variety of topics. If you are interested in presenting at a future ABPDU Expo, or you’d like to let us know what you’re interested in learning about at a future ABPDU Expo, please complete this form.
